Brazil  is a huge and beautiful country in South America  where its inhabitants are well known all over the world for their friendly, welcoming and talkative attitude to visitors from all over the world.

Brazilians are also known for their passion to music, dance, party and soccer.

It is very easy to find Brazil on the world map because its shape reminds the shape of a heart. It has a population  of over 180 million people and it is the fifth most populous country in the world, after China, India, the US, and Indonesia.

Brazil is also the 5th largest in the world. Only Russia, Canada, China, and the US have larger territories than Brazil.

Did you know that if you take out Alaska, all of the US could fit inside Brazil with a little to spare? You could also fit easily all the 23 European countries inside Brazil!

Brazilians are descendant from people that came from many other parts of the world. The first immigrants were the Indians who arrived from
Asia between 7 and 10 thousand years ago, during the Ice Age

The first European settlers, the Portuguese, came much late: they only arrived after the Portuguese explorer

Pedro Álvares Cabral's expedition reached the coast of Brazil in the year 1500. Other European explores also tried to set up colonies alongside the Brazilian coast.

Did you know that Brazil was discovered by accident 510 years ago when a Portuguese expedition to India, led by Pedro Álvares Cabral, swung too far westward in 1500?

The first expedition from England arrived in 1552; France invaded the city of Rio de Janeiro  in 1555; and from 1630 to 1654, the Dutch  occupied the northeast coast of Brazil in todays State of Pernambuco, which was, at that time, the center of sugar cane  production.

As Portugal  began to develop the colony, all these settlers were eventually expelled by the Portuguese and  to increase their sugar cane production, the Portuguese started to bring slaves from Africa, mostly from Nigeria, Benin, and Angola. The slave trade  continued in Brazil until the late 19th century, when it was abolished in 1888.

With the end of slavery other immigrants from Europe, especially from Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Poland came to Brazil seeking to own the land and work on the sugar cane plantations. Non-Europeans, like Lebanese, Syrians, and Japanese also came in large numbers. Some of these people came to work in developing industries, in large cities such as São Paulo. The Japanese began to arrive in 1905, in an historic ship called Kasato Maru.

By the way, the largest Japanese city outside Japan is located in the Brazilian city of São Paulo, in the district known as Liberdade which means Liberty.

People usually say that Brazilians have all the faces of the world because there is no such a thing as a typical Brazilian". Today, Brazilians are the African, European, Native Indian, Asian and Middle-Eastern descendents, mostly intermixed. If you walk down a crowded street in Brazil, visit a festival, or go to a soccer game, you will see all kinds of people of mixed races. Unlike elsewhere, Brazilians are proud to say that Brazil is a true melting pot!
